We begin our Alberta adventure up in the northwest part of our province. Back in 1950, the largest wildfire in recorded North American history happened right here! The Chinchaga River area was deeply affected and this is the story of that event.

“Fueled by a tinder dry forest that seemingly went on forever, the relatively small blaze developed into a wildfire of such monstrous proportions that the thickness of smoke led some people in Ontario to believe that an atomic bomb had exploded and the western world was at war with Russia.”

“The Chinchaga fire was allowed to burn freely. It produced so much smoke and haze across eastern North America and Europe that people wondered what caused this “Great Smoke Pall”. Blue suns and moons were observed as result of the smoke.'“

The Chinchaga Firestorm

“Outside of the province in late September, strange things happened as a result of the “Great Smoke Pall.” The towns of Sarnia and Guelph in Ontario experienced three-hour midday periods of darkness and city of Toronto streetlights turned on by themselves and drivers were forced to use headlights during daytime hours. Aircraft were grounded and the natural routines of animals were affected. Cows needed to be milked at different times and birds were bedding down at midday. Some of the speculation regarding the cause of the darkness and smoke included nuclear armageddon, secret U.S military experiments, supernatural forces, a solar eclipse and even alien invasion. “
